Las Vegas Golf Courses, and the ‘Losers’ Who Play Them

July 4th, 2009

It should come as no surprise that some of the most expensive golf clubs in the country are found in and around Las Vegas. It’s just not as easy as you might think to keep a lush green in the middle of a desert! That said, many private golf courses in the area don’t even list rates, so one can only guess how steep the rates actually are. But there are still a number of private and public courses where you can go and play a great round of golf - and still leave the green with some greenbacks in your wallet.

I lost at blackjack last night but I still have $50 left…can I play golf, or should I just head over to the slot machines instead?

Well, I guess that all depends on just how lucky you feel. But if you are tired of giving the casinos all of your money, and want to take advantage of the great golf courses Las Vegas has to offer, then you are in luck…maybe. A growing concern for those wanting to play on the golf courses in the Las Vegas area is the fluctuating rates. Hey, we’re all used to rates changing due to seasons, lighting conditions, reservations…the works. But some of the golf courses in Las Vegas have divided the seasons up in ever-more-imaginative ways, that seem to try and squeeze every last possible dollar out of the green. However (and this is subject to change, so DEFINITELY try to book some green time as far in advance as possible), the following golf courses can be played for $50 or less: Craig Ranch, Los Prados, and Eagle Crest.

I managed to escape the casinos with $100…golf anyone?

If you have been able to squirrel away a Ben Franklin, then a lot of the golf courses Las Vegas offers will gladly put you on the green. Now again, the rates at some golf courses are changing by the day, it seems - so be sure to check before showing up with only Ben. Those officially posting fees of $100 or less during the winter months are: Desert Rose, Las Vegas Golf Club, Painted Desert, Highland Falls, Palm Valley, Las Vegas National Golf Club, and the Rhodes Ranch. Oh, and for those not “in the know”, rates tend to be higher for golf courses in Las Vegas during the winter months, as the heat can be downright brutal during the summer. Oh yeah, Las Vegas is in the middle of a big desert, isn’t it?

I really need to stretch my golfing funds as much as possible…what options do I have?

No worries, my friend - sometimes the cards just aren’t rolling. You can save anywhere from $5-15 by walking golf courses instead of driving the carts. Not a great option during the heat of the summer months, but an option that can help stretch the dollar a little farther.

Twilight rates are another way to save money, but they can be very confusing. What is most confusing about the golf courses Las Vegas has to offer is that their twilight rates are not necessarily offered in the dying light. During the summer months, and due to the extreme heat, twilight hours tend to start in the late morning and early afternoon. In the winter, however, twilight hours occur at the end of the day, and it is not uncommon for golfers to not get in an entire 18 holes.

While Las Vegas does have many exclusive golf clubs, with prices so steep that they refuse to post them, there are a number of reasonably priced golf courses that offer some great greens at prices even the worst of gamblers can afford. Plus, if you are wise and plan accordingly, you can get those low prices even lower - and maybe even get in another round of golf to keep your mind off those lousy cards for a few hours longer! After a great round on the green, I can promise you that you will not leave Las Vegas feeling like a “loser” - even if your wallet tells you otherwise.

How A Tightwad Protects His Boats

July 4th, 2009

I have always wanted to retire near a river or lake. I realized how much I looked forward to fishing trips and have rented a houseboat a few times, so retiring near water was my goal. It is more expensive, but the whole point of living near water is to enjoy it, whether by fishing, swimming, or water skiing, so I figured waiting several years would be well worth the price. A bittersweet circumstance (the passing of a dear aunt) left me with a simple lake front property, and I moved in three years ago.

Now that the property issue was resolved, I invested in a large motorboat. The lake is about half the size of Lake Tahoe and the water gets pretty choppy on windy days. Along with that I picked up a small boat for using close to home. The lot is on a steep slope; my next major investment was a small dock with steps leading up to my house.

Then I bought a boat lift to use for getting the boats out of the water for repairs, wintering, etc. Costs were really adding up when I realized I had neglected to price boat covers. My girlfriend pointed out that a lot of my neighbors used canopies. The first thing I noticed was how many birds flew under the tops, building nests, and all kinds of spider webs. What a mess. After some research I decided to use boat covers.

I took the measurements of the two boats to a marine dealer. The few boat covers in stock were generic and did not match my measurements. They were also cheap-looking in my opinion. I needed a good look and a great fit. The dealer was a nice guy and gave me the phone numbers of two businesses that make custom canvasses.

It turned out the businesses were unable to make my boat covers for months, and it would be expensive. I was running out of ideas.

Girlfriend to the rescue: my sweetie and her girlfriend bought canvas and made the boat covers for me in less than five weeks. It was an early birthday present for me and more than what I could have hoped to get. They even put my name on the front; talk about custom. My only cost is houseguests every weekend this summer. Well worth it.

Stretching Exercise For Golf: Longer Drives - Better Golf Swing Consistency

July 3rd, 2009

A stretching exercise for golf program will add many yards to your drives and dramatically improve your golf swing consistency. In fact there is no legitimate golf exercise program that does not include stretching exercises. That is how important a stretching exercise for golf program is.

Actually there are many types of stretching exercises for golf. Some of them can comfortably be done in the office while you are still seated on your chair in your workstation. And probably when you have a few minutes to spare or you need to spend a moment or two thinking about something, maybe a decision you have to make. You can easily do your thinking as you execute the simple stretch exercises.

One of the exercises that can be done in this situation is twisting your upper body to reach and touch as far back on one side of the chair as you can. This stretching exercise for golf should be repeated reaching out for the other side of your chair.

There are also stretching exercises for golf that should be done with dumbbells. Others are done using a medicine ball. Most of them are described in my other golf exercise articles.

The reason why a golf-trainer.com/public/599.cfm stretching exercise for golf program is so effective in improving the golf swing is because they lengthen the muscles and strengthen them in such a way that the abnormal and unnatural movement of the golf swing feels as comfortable and as natural as possible to the body.

The more natural a golf swing feels, the better your golf swing will be and by extension the results will also improve dramatically.

Even after your game shows improvement, it is a good idea to continue with your stretching exercise for golf so as to keep your body and muscles in tip-top condition for golfing and especially the golf swing. Stretching exercises for golf are the real key to improving your golf game.

San Diego Skydive Lessons

July 3rd, 2009

Believe it or not, skydiving has been around for hundreds of years. Some historians even trace the first parachutes back to China in the 1100s. That’s a long distance, in years and miles, away from skydiving San Diego. But if you are in the southern California area and want to do some San Diego parachuting, it’s good to know you have history on your side.

The modern history of skydiving began at the end of the 18th century, when stunt performers in France first began doings jumps out of hot-air balloons. It wasn’t long after the invention of the airplane that people got the idea to leap out of that. Skydiving, skydiving school, and the aircraft to support the sport really took off after World War II.

Then Raymond Young, the famous founding father of the sport, came up with the term “skydiving” and its become a fun and famous, and for some people profitable, pastime ever since. Skydiving school and commercial jump sites opened all over the United States, and the world. California is no different. To skydive in San Diego, you have a wealth of nearby options, as well as options up the coast.

To stay local in southern California, though, you’ll want to first check out these spots for skydiving San Diego, Some of San Diego parachuting opportunity is just right outside of the city.

Pacific Coast Skydiving, for instance, is just 20 miles south of the San Diego airport. They specialize in tandem beginner jumps, but they also have room on the aircraft for fun jumpers as well.

Skydive San Diego does just that, giving you the prime chance to skydive in San Diego. You can’t beat the scenery either, with clear views of Mexico and the Pacific.

Of course, don’t feel limited by the confines of the San Diego metropolitan area. Skydiving lessons and jumps can be had from San Jose to Sacramento, Fresno to Frisco, no matter if you’re a beginner looking for your first tandem ride or an old-hat looking for jump number 1.001. After all, California is right at home with extreme sports like skydiving, surfing, skateboarding, and rock climbing. You name it, Californians do it.

10 Tips Every Golfer Should Know

July 3rd, 2009

This article will show you ten golf tips that will help you to become a better golfer. I realize that you get golf tips all the time, but with any luck you may not have heard about some of these and they will in turn make you a better golfer. If you’re anything like me, every little bit helps.

1) Keep your eyes where the ball was – the goal here is pretty self explanatory. We want to avoid the urge to follow the ball with our eyes. As you hit the ball, keep your eyes focused on the ground where the ball was. This is especially true with short puts.

2) Putt with your eyes closed – When you practice puts with your eyes closed, you feel your body’s movements. You’ll begin to sense your shoulders working like a pendulum, and you’ll keep your body in line better.

3) Keep your head still – head movement is crucial for solid contact. Don’t follow the ball with your eyes and head after impact.

4) Use the toe of the putter – many pros hit the ball on the toe of the putter, rather than the sweet spot. This will tend to stop the “jump” of the ball.

5) Putt to the “high” side – when lining up a putt that’s going to break, favor the “high” side of the hole rather than the “low” side. This way gravity will work with you. And if you favored the “low” side, gravity would work against you. It’s pretty simple, but it works!

6) Reading the Green – reading the green is a can of worms all by itself. The most important things to read are break and speed. Practice on the putting green is crucial. Remember, it’s much better to make adjustments on the practice green than on the first hole. When reading the green get behind the ball (and many people squat). This way you can see the contours of the green. Also alternate views tend to help you gauge the distance. And don’t forget to watch your partner’s putts. How does the ball act on the green? All of the pros do this.

7) Practice swings – put a tee in the ground sticking up approximately one inch. You should be able to hit the tee consistently without touching the ground at all. Remember – the longer the club, the more precision that is required. Practice this exercise until you can consistently clip the tee without touching the ground in any way.

8) Get the ball rolling – when chipping onto the green, you want to keep the ball as low to the ground as possible. Many average golfers try to pitch the ball up in the air and this is a mistake.

9) The right equipment – for the average golfer, having equipment that’s fitted to physique and capabilities is crucial. Highly skilled players can get away with just about any equipment, but the rest of us need a little help. You must like the “feel” of your equipment. Many retailers will let you test equipment before you buy it. This is a great idea.

10) Snap a line – practice your putting with a chalk line. You can purchase a chalk line at any hardware store for five or six bucks. Find a putt on a practice green that’s straight and snap a chalk line from about five or six feet to the middle of the cup. Now make sure that the line (marked on your putter) is lined up exactly on the chalk line. Start making putts. This will train your eyes to “see square”, which will help you immensely.

Save Yourself a Packet, Buy a Secondhand Rifle

July 3rd, 2009

If you are first looking at going hunting then you probably don’t have a weapon. The first thing that you need to do is buy yourself a rifle. A new rifle costs between $700 to $2000, but you can save yourself some money by buying a rifle second hand. It will probably cost you about half of the cost of new rifle. However there are a few other important things that you should consider before purchasing a used gun.

You obviously want to buy a gun in the best condition possible. Here are some tips that you must follow in the gun shop. First of all, remove the bolt to check the condition of the bolt face. Observe carefully to check that no metal has eroded around the firing pin. If there is any sign of erosion, it means you should avoid it at all costs!

Now, its turn of checking the bolt head, to do this lift the handle, pull it back and then slam it forward. In these activities the firing pin should not go off. Now, pull the trigger with safety on and observe the result. Also, check the bore of rifle to ensure the sharpness and clean cut of grooves in barrel. If the result is negative, it means that the rifle is not in good enough condition to buy. The bore should never be rusty or pitted, if it is it may be very dangerous to you.

For buying a second hand rifle, even you don’t need to go to any shop or person, you can get access to hundreds of different rifles all through the internet. Here again you have to consider some important aspects. If you are having it delivered by the postal service, then it must have a Federal Firearms License (FFL). You should understand all the Terms and Conditions before placing your order for the weapon. Get information about the cost and any other service taxes that may be incurred. You should also take the certificate of good condition of the weapon so that you can’t be cheated.

Now you hopefully have adequate information to check out the condition of used rifles. So, whether you purchase it from shop or online, you won’t buy a lemon. Always check the difference between the cost of new and used rifle and if it is not a profitable deal then don’t hesitate in bargaining.

The Power of Present Day Professional Wood Bats

July 2nd, 2009

The old time professional wood bats were the size of a red wood tree. They weighed as much as five men could handle and could knock down a brick wall with one whack. Mighty men like Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb wielded these manly bats with a skill and precision that no modern day baseball pro could ever dream to have.

Then again, Ruth and Cobb didn’t have hurlers that registered triple-digit with their fast balls. They didn’t face the advanced and near magical pitching technique of the Braves bullpen or the Yankees superstars. Today’s batters need to fight fire with fire, and so the technology behind today’s professional bats has to match the velocity and movement of today’s professional pitchers.

Superstar hitters like Derek Jeter and Scott Rolen rely on the best professional wood bats out there to give them a shot. Compared to the mythic sluggers of baseball golden days, today’s batters rely on lighter weight bats that also have thinner handles.

True modern science comes into the way that many of today’s bats are cup balance. This involves removing as much as three-quarters of an ounce of wood out of the end of the barrel to make the bat lighter. A lighter bat means a faster swing, and a faster swing means a farther drive. Experts estimate that as many as 30 percent of today’s players use a cup balanced bat.

Today’s professional wood bats mostly come from wood from the white ash tree. Some players, though, have been experimenting with wood from maple trees. No matter the tree or the amount of wood they scoop out, though, today’s batters still have to be able to have the hand speed, dexterity, know-how, and vision to make that contact. Bats can only help you out so much, even if they are as big as a red wood.

Do Not Ignore The Importance Of A Parents Meeting

July 2nd, 2009

A parents meeting should be organized at least two to four weeks before the start of the season. Being a coach, it is your duty to give importance to a parents meeting.

A handout of three or four pages that includes is a list of the team with phone numbers and certain philosophies and organizational items should be prepared.

A parents meeting makes for a better run season for the kids, the parents and the coach. But, at the same time, make sure that this meeting should not last for more than ten to fifteen minutes.

The meeting should be made compulsory for all parents. Ample time should be devoted to the question and answer session.

The coach is required to lay out his goals and also, express to the parents about how he runs his practices. Besides this, the coach should also tell the parents that they should teach lessons of discipline and punctuality to their wards.

It should be informed to them that the players have to arrive at games 30 minutes before they start and if they cannot make a game, it is their duty to call up the coach to inform about the same.

Also, let the parents know that they are expected to be at the practice at least five minutes before it ends as it is not the responsibility of the coach to drop off the players at their respective destinations!

In the parents meeting, you ought to address all the complaints that the parents may have during the season. In order to cut down on the number of phone calls from parents, it is suggested that you develop a certain policy for the same and fix the period during which you will address the complaints.

To conclude, just make sure that that you have each of the points you want to bring up in writing.
As you are volunteering your time, it is your duty as well as your right to make the season run as smooth as possible for yourself.

Football - Defensive Strategy

July 2nd, 2009

Bill Belichick is said to be one of the greatest defensive strategists of the modern era. While we’re not going to pick apart Bill’s game plan to try to figure out why he’s so good at what he does, we are going to take a very basic look at defensive strategy and how to make your defense as effective as possible.

Unlike the offense, which essentially dictates how the play is going to go down, the defense is more reactionary, not that it can’t take an aggressive stance. We’ll get into that later. But for the most part, the defense has to react and react quickly to what the offense is doing. A split second can mean the difference between a stop and a score.

The offense basically has only two play options if you simplify this game. They are pass and run. Depending on which one the offense chooses, the defense must react accordingly.

Most pass plays are pretty obvious. The quarterback will take the ball from center and drop back in the pocket about 2 or 3 yards to pass. This is something that the defense will spot immediately and can react to by having their secondary go into proper coverage, since they now don’t have to worry about a run breaking into the secondary. They can give all their attention to the receivers.

But with some pass plays, they are not so obvious. The quarterback may take the ball from center and fake a handoff to a running back. The defense must not allow itself to be faked out by this. They need to keep their eye on the quarterback to see if he still has the ball. There is only so long that he can hide it. In the meantime, the front line of the defense can still stop the running back, even if he doesn’t have the ball.

In many cases, the play that is coming is going to be pretty obvious. In a third down and inches to go, the offense is going to look to run the ball. The defense will pretty much jam the box in this scenario in an attempt to keep the running back from making the first down. The same is true with long yardage plays. If it’s third down and 20 to go, you can pretty much have your front line blitz the quarterback and maybe even a strong safety along with it. The chances of a run here are pretty slim.

In all these instances, however, the defense is reacting. Well, the defense can also take a proactive stance. It can change its looks for each play, thus trying to confuse the offense with its coverage. This is something that Bill Belichick did so well as a defensive coordinator and even today as a head coach. The key to this game is to always keep your opponent guessing. Once he knows what’s coming all the time, your chances of stopping him on defense become much more slim.
